Chris Kuete was born in Yaounde Cameroon (AFRICA) child of Lando Jeannette and Martin Kuete and the third born of 4 children. He graduated from Lycee Leon Mba (Gabon) high school in 2003 and moved back to Cameroon for university. He was offered many scholarships to go and play College basketball in the US (Cloud county community college and Weatherford CC) but he never went because of personal reasons. Then he left for Malaysia to continue his studies. He got drafted by a local professional team during an exhibition game. So, he had to stop school and focus more on basketball. But he still takes classes during the off season. Now, he is playing professional basketball with the desire to compete on the high level basketball (NBA).

FLEURON OF YAOUNDE

Fleuron of Yaounde was a new team created by Roger Mbomiko a Cameroonian living in France.He created this team for young talented players who wanted to play overseas.His objective was to work with those young talented players and sell them to teams in Europe.But at that time,i was not yet interested in going to play overseas,i first wanted to improve my game in order to be the best or among the best in Cameroon,before thinking of going to play overseas.
Most of the players of Fleuron were very young like me.Also,almost all of them were in their first year senior.These are the names of the main players of the team:Bitee Parfait,Bitsegui,Aboya Alfred,Essengue Gaston,Kenmoe Wash,Kamga Bertrand,Pendia Ange,Eone Serge,Teumo Jeremy.Among these players the only who had already played senior was Bitee Parfait.The others were coming from junior teams like Espoir & Scorpion of Yaounde,where most of them were among the best players of their teams.I was the only one in the team who never played junior;i went straight to the senior level.I was very exited because i was going to play with all those guys that i always watched playing.
When i was coming for my first practice,i was exited and at the same time worried because none of they players knew me but i knew most of them because i used to watch them play;the only person i knew was the coach who offered me to come and join the team.Once i got to the practice court,i was the first there,none of the players,neither the coaches were there.I sat for few about half an hour and players started coming.None of them said hi to me until the coach came and introduced me.My first practice went on pretty well even tough i had some misunderstanding with one of my teammates.As time was passing,we were getting closer of the beginning of the regular season and i was realizing that i choose the right team for me.
Our first game was against a team call Espoir of Yaounde.One of our top players,a shooting guard was hurt so he couldn't play.So i knew i was going to be in the starting five and when the game started i was in the starting five.I was really exited to play with our point guard Bitee Parfait and i knew we were going to do big things together.The game went well and we won.Bitee and i were the players of the game and because of that game i took the confidence of the coaches.This made me to always be in the starting five for the rest of the season.We kept on winning and every body was wandering how a team made of young players who just turned senior are beating every team in the league.We became champion of the Centre province and every team was now scared of us.People were surprised by the way i was playing because most of the people never saw me and i never played junior.

Basketball in Yaounde

I was really exited about moving to Yaounde but at the same time i was scared because most of the best teams and players in Cameroon are based in Yaounde.So i knew it wasn't going to be easy to be among the best in Yaounde.What made it harder is that there was no basketball court near my house like in Dschang.The closest basketball court was two taxis far from my house.Because of that,i couldn't play everyday and every time like i used to play in Dschang so i lose some of my skills.For example i lose my jumper.Since i couldn't play like i used to do,i started working more on my conditioning while looking for a team.When i wanted to play sometimes,i used to walk from my neighborhood to another who was like 20 minutes driving by car because i didn't have money to pay for the taxi.Finally,during some pickup games in the Cite U(it was a place where the best players of Yaounde used to gather every Tuesday and Thursday to play some pickup games)i got an invitation to play a friendly game with a team called YUC(Yaounde university club);we played against BEAC(they were one of the best team of the country that year)most of my teammates were experience players and were playing for different teams in the league;i was the only one who didn't have a team.I did very well during that game;i was scoring,rebounding and blocking.People were impressed and everybody was asking who am i because most of the people had never seen me.After the game,i got so many offers from different teams but chosed to join a new team with young players like me called FLEURON OF YAOUNDE.

The Begining

I started playing basketball exactly in 1993 but i can't remember what date.As days were passing,my passion for basketball kept on growing.I remember i used to play from morning to evening everyday without missing one day.I couldn't stop playing!!They are some friends i started to play with like,Zedong Steve,Gilles Armand,Wilfried,Eddy,Malcom,Djoukam franck & Arnaud.After 3 years my father bought me some Micheal Jordan Videos;that's what really boost my mental and made me started dreaming to play in the NBA(National Basketball Association);i kept on working hard to make my dream come true.Very fast,everybody in the city started to know me because of my passion for basketball and that's how i started to be friend with all the best players of the city.Some of their names are Brice Vounang,Rodrigue Tamo alias Ambiance,Jojo,Foko Raoul,Bertrand Kom,Ngoss,Cheryl,Akoa Richard,Kinkeu Mirabeau,Moussango Christian,Ze Serge,Momo Martial,Tongo Landry and many others.Among these players the one's that made me dream were Brice(his shoot with the board and his leadership skills),Jojo(ball handling) and Kom Bertrand(3 pointers and ball handling).But the one's that kept on giving me advices and were trying to integrate me among the best were Brice,Moussango and Ngoss.My first challenge was to be always selected every time the best players were playing pick up games.Sometimes i was selected and most of those times were when Brice was around so he used to take me in his team.I was scared to play because i was by far the smallest in age and height;so all i used to do was pass the ball and shoot the 3's.At that time no one could shoot the 3's like me!!In 1996,i got my first real competition,the Fenasco in Bafoussam(the best high schools in the province gathered to play a tournament);i was really scared because i had never played such a competition.At the beginning of the first game i was really scared but i was trying to hide.When the game started,after i grabbed some rebounds i became confident and i couldn't feel the pressure anymore;i played well until the finals and i was really surprise by myself.In the finals against Bafoussam,the pressure came back because they had the best team in the province for years.When the game started,i missed the first layup(1 against 0) and the pressure got higher.But after grabbing some rebounds the pressure diminished and i hit some 3's and 2's.But at the end we lose the game but i was proud of myself because my hard work was paying off.The second tournament was the under sixteen years old competition in Bafoussam.I killed it and i was named best under sixteen player of the west province.After this tournament i started playing with the best players of the city more often and was not scared anymore when playing with them.One of the best game was against Nkongsamba in bafoussam in 1998 where i nailed 24 pts and helped my team to win.After this,i gained everyone respect and i was now one of the best players in the city.
During the summer,i went to Yaounde(capital of Cameroon)for holidays with the family as we used to do every year.In order to keep shape,because there was no team and basketball court around my house my father contacted one of his old friend who was coaching a basketball team.He gave me the authorization to come and train with his team while im in Yaounde.I went there a saturday,i was scared to meet players that are better than me because we,in small cities used to think that all the basketball players in the big cities are very good.when i arrived,i saw that most of the players were around my age and i was almost the same height like most of them;this made the pressure i had go down.As soon as practice started,i realized that they were not that good but when we started pickup games,the coach insulted me because i didn't pass the ball to an open teammate;it frustrated me and i couldn't play well the rest of the practice.I started thinking that i'm not good enough.As soon as practice finished,i left and i never came back for the rest of the summer because he made me feel ashamed in front of all his players by what he told me.But when i left,i promise myself that i was going to work harder.That is what i did until my family moved to Yaounde in 1999.
